There is no doubt that Anthonio Conte's Chelsea FC is going through a goal draught recently. Yes the team put three past West Brom in their last match but it is glaring that the goals are not coming in as before. The question is, is Conte not the architect of his own predicament?
The Diego Costa Factor
It is common knowledge that the Brazilian born Spanish citizen was instrumental to Chelsea's winning the league last season. Rather curiously, the Italian manager "thanked" the striker with an "I no longer need you" text message. This infuriated Costa who decided he was also done with Chelsea.
The Failure to sign Lukaku
Conte had expected that after his title winning exploits, all he needed to do was to name a player and wham bam, the player will be signed by the club. This was not to be as rivals Manchester United priced away Lukaku.
In desperation, Chelsea ans Conte settled for Alvaro Morata a frin
ge Real Madrid player who is not used to pressure. Morata is no Drogba or Costa. He lacks the strength for hold up play. A character trait for Chelsea point men.
Failing to Rate Michy Batshuayi
Another of Conte's self inflicted headache is his failure to rate the Belgian talisman Michy "Batman" Batshuayi. Curiously, rather than play Michy, the Italian would opt to use Hazard as a false nine. A strategy that was clearly not working but always fancied by the coach who seemed to have chosen to push the 'self-destruct' button. Seeing he was clearly unwanted despite scoring important goals for Chelsea Michy opted to seek for playing time elsewhere in order not to miss the train to Russia 2018. Surprisingly again, Conte allowed Michy to go even without a compliment of at least three natural strikers in the team.
Batshuayi moved to Dortmund on loan on transfer deadline day with Aubameyang whom he replaced going to Arsenal to pave way for Giroud to move Chelsea.
Of all the three players in that merry-go-round tranfer deals, only Batshuayi has turned out an instant hit. While Aubameyang has managed to score one goal for Arsenal on his debut, Giroud has not been on the scorers sheet despite an impressive performance on his first start for the Blues. Batshuayi on the other hand has scored five goals in three appearances for Dortmund.
Will Conte regret not rating Michy? Time will tell.
