IS JORGINHO THE PERFECT FIT FOR CHELSEA'S SARRI?

BY NAIRA CHRONICLES

When Chelsea beat Manchester City to sign the Brazilian born, Italy international for a fee of about £50m pounds, a lot of fans looked forward to watching Jorginho display his skills in the English Premier League (EPL).

True to predictions, Jorginho has broken the record of the most passes in an EPL. He successfully passed the ball 180 times when Chelsea played away at Newcastle last September. He also has the highest number of passes (628) in the 2018/2019 season ahead of Laporte (560), Rudiger (448), Luiz (415) and Azpilllicueta (412). Interesting apart from Laporte (Man City), the others are co-Chelsea stars. It is not surprising that Jorginho has that number of passes to his name. This is because that is the way the team is structured. Everyone feeds Jorginho so that he can deliver the pass.

In Coach Sarri's estimation Jorginho is better than Fabregas, a player in the Chelsea squad who can fit the role Jorginho plays. The truth however is that Sarriball is not too effective with Jorginho. The team keeps on passing the ball around without making any commensurate attempt on goal. This is due largely to Jorginho failing to make defence splitting passes. He merely only passes the ball to the left, right or backwards. It is not surprising therefore that he has not made any assists after 19 games in the EPL.

On the other hand, Fabregas is known for delivering killer passes but is not rated by Sarri. Even defenders Rudiger and Luiz have offered better passes to team mates that have created goal scoring opportunities. The vexed question is, 'Is Jorginho overrated?'
