SOUTH AFRICA TO ELECT NEW PRESIDENT

Mr Cyril Ramaphosa is set to be elected as president of the Republic of South Africa on Thursday. This follows Mr Jacob Zuma's forced resignation from office.

Ramaphosa is the leader of the ANC, South Africa's leading party. He is likely to be elected when parliament meets in Cape Town on Thursday. Baleka  Baleka Mbete, the speaker of the country's parliament, confirmed in a statement that a letter of resignation from Zuma had been received, adding "the resignation of the President is effective immediately."
