PASTOR'S CORNER: DEALING WITH PASTOR SUNDAY ADELAJA'S BARRAGE OF CRITICISMS

By Sam T MacPepple, PhD

In recent times, Ukrained-based pastor of Nigerian roots, Sunday Adelaja has taken to criticising ministers of the gospel in Africa and especially Nigeria. In doing so, he has categorised all pastors in Africa (and especially) into the same pool. If you watch any of his broadcasts on the social media (facebook/youtube), you will find him spending sometimes about 3 hours calling out pastors in Africa and especially Nigeria. It is shocking to see that DSA (as his followers call him) does not see any difference between, for example Pastor EA Adeboye and say, Bishop Obinim of Ghana. To DSA, all African pastors are the same.

DSA has called men of God like Pastor Adeboye, Bishop Oyedepo, Pastor Enenche, Pastor Ibiyeomie, Apostle Suleman etc hypnotists, charlatans and several unprintable names. He has labeled pastors in Nigeria fraudsters. In his usual character, he does not consider that the church in Nigeria is advancing the cause of God's kingdom. He rather sees the church only as exploitative and the cause of the country's woes.

Pastor Adelaja has in the course of his daily criticism of the Nigerian/African church made nonsense of testimonies shared in church. His modus operandi is to get his 'online video hunters' to search for videos of church services or messages with the singular intent of criticising the men of God or the church service. With that strategy is place, it is always easy for his team to bring out a topic for discussion. He has in the course of this agenda, criticised offerings, tithing, prayers, pastors blessing their members etc. He has held out that "seed" has nothing to do with money.

Recently, he singled out a testimony shared by a sister at a Shiloh meeting at the Living Faith Church. The sister testified about her she made a covenant, honoured it and God blessed her with a well-paid job. DSA maintained in his criticism that it was not the covenant but her hardwork and consistency that paid off! He continues to teach that his books are superior to kingdom commitment on the part of church members. As far as he is concern, what people need to advance in career and business is not prayer or church commitment but hardwork and ideas. While some of the points he raises are in order, it is not difficult to notice that it is merely a smokescreen to promote his agenda. Smear the reputation of other men of God, advance himself as superior and promote the sale of his books!

During one of his broadcasts, DSA went to the low of maintaining that he is more knowledgeable and inteligent than the likes of Bishop Oyedeop and co. A viewer had asked wether he was acting out of envy and he said that Bishop Oyedepo listens with awe when he preaches. To the discerning at that point, you would understand DSA's motive in what he is doing.

It is also worrisome that DSA is raising a gang of unruly, disrespectful and carefree e-warriors who are quick to insult anyone who dares ask a question that is their group is not comfortable with. At the end of the question and the insults, you get blocked on their media platform from making any further contributions.  How can a genuine man of God be comfortable with that?  Members of the DSA family always say on the platform that they no longer go to church and DSA is happy with that.

One of his proteges is a lady known as Mayowa. Mayowa under DSA's watch does a mid-day broadcast while DSA comes up later in the evening to compliment her. This lady continues to heap insults daily on fathers of the faith. Mayowa calls men like Papa Adeboye, Papa Ayo, Bishop Oyedepo etc all sorts of names. To the DSA family this is okay.

Initially the church in Nigeria was worried about what DSA has become. Well, he has reached his peak. Nothing he says anymore is new. The Lord has built his church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. It is time not to give him and his desidents any more attention! They can continue as reprubates. They can continue with their insults, criticsms etc. It will not stop the work of the Lord. DSA's distractions should not worry any pastor anymore. None should pay him attention. The church must keep the focus and advance. Even in the Pauline era there were men like DSA who always yield themselves to be used to distract the work of the kingdom and to advance the wisdom of men. The Nigerian church will definitely rise above her detractors!
